Excursion Etna Summit Craters at 3400 mt.

Meeting point:
Bar Esagonal, Piazzale Rifugio Sapienza.

Gathering:
10:00 AM, equipment delivery, bureaucratic procedures, latest information from the volcanological bulletin of INGV Catania and ticket delivery, meeting with the volcanological guide or alpine guide.
From here begins our excursion to the summit craters of Etna, the highest volcano in Europe.
The departure time may be subject to variations caused by forecasts from volcanological bulletins and civil protection. Any variations will be communicated in the morning by our guides.

Departure:
10:30 AM. From the gathering point we will then take the new Etna cable car, thus reaching an altitude of 2500 m a.s.l.. From here we will continue with special 4×4 buses to reach an altitude of 2900 m a.s.l.. Here will begin our trekking that will allow us to cross the lunar landscape, consisting of recent lava flows emitted during winter and spring 2025, to reach some eruptive fractures from February 2025, then we will begin the ascent to the main crater of Mount Etna.

From here we will have the opportunity to admire the extraordinary spectacle that the highest volcano in Europe offers us, exploring inside the bowels of the central crater, rich in many sulfur sublimates and fumaroles We will continue on the crater terrace to admire the Bocca Nuova crater, which currently has two new craters inside it, the Southeast Crater, with alignment of the new crater wells and the Northeast Crater. From this point, if weather conditions permit, we will be able to observe Calabria, the Aeolian Islands, the mountains and the interior of Sicily, as well as the entire eastern Sicilian coast.

We will descend along the flank of the crater to skirt the still smoking flows of 2025, to reach the Barbagallo craters, explosive craters from October 2002, which we will visit. Then we will continue downhill on the immense desert panorama that will lead us to the belvedere of the Valle del Bove, we will flank the great cone of the “laghetto” crater which is also an explosive crater then we will take the cable car and reach the starting point.

It will be a journey through geology, volcanology and earth sciences, admiring the active craters of Bocca Nuova, Voragine, Northeast crater and Southeast crater, with all the new explosive vents.
The excursion to the summit craters of Etna, given its demanding character, is recommended for people accustomed to challenging routes. Categorically not recommended for people with heart conditions, asthmatics, and untrained people.

The minimum recommended age is 8 years.
